Pot Plant Work In Progess

A quick update I've been do some basic poly modelling following the Pot Plant tutorial (See the link in past post)

Here is a quick screen grab, as a long time 3DS Max user (10 years +) the change is a bit strange at first but I think I've started looking at the node tree for poly modelling as some where between the Stack and an infinite history. I'm not sure yet if I could make the move over to using just Houdini and from all the blogs and industry posts I read maybe I will take another journey into Maya.

Keep watching this space !

Tutorials to do in January

I've been taking a look at the list of tutorials that I have to go through and the vast wealth of free online tutorials. So with that in mind I'm looking at the the first few that I will be doing, not sure of the order yet but here are the ones I'm going to start with in January.

Adrian Lazar's Counting Frame, as it looks to cover a whole range of topics and basics of Houdini

and then maybe the Plant Pot too.

There looks to a few other good ones there, so I'm sure I'll go back to those later on.

Then a few from the sidefx site, starting with Flip fluids and Pyro

Should see me through January and into February

Procedural Lighting Field

This is one of the frames from the tutorial I have just finished, CG-Masters, procedural lighting field. I the render settings need changing for the finished version but gives you an idea of what the final video will look like.

Notes on the Plan

I few points to note, firstly I do have some knowledge of Houdini already I'm not starting this as a complete novice, I used it for a large part of my final year project at Teesside University. The basic UI, node functions and some basic expressions I already know. So if your following along and I appear to be jumping ahead that is the reason why.

Secondly due to starting this in the new year and with all the xmas things going on, I have already started the first tutorial and may well get on the the second one before the year has started, OK that's cheating I hear you say but hey this is may plan and I can mess around with it if I choose, I also think that some of the later projects may take me more than a week so starting a little early I'm giving myself a kick start for the harder times ahead.

It All Begins Here!

This is the start of my new blog that will cover a year starting January 1st 2013. It will be as a record for me and hopefully you too, following the process of learning Sidefx Houdini in-depth. The main aim will be to start and complete one tutorial or mini project per week for the whole year. I plan to start around the middle of the year doing the mini projects in such a way that as the year comes to an end there will be added together to make a full portfolio worthy piece.

I hope you follow me and maybe join the journey too if your learning Houdini.
